What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography, is a safe and non-invasive imaging modality that employs high-frequency sound waves to generate real-time, detailed images of the body’s internal structures. It plays a vital role in diagnosing, monitoring, and guiding the management of a wide range of medical conditions.

What happens during the ultrasound examination ?

You will be asked to lie on the examination table, and the operator/assistant will help position you appropriately. Ultrasound Gel will be applied to the area being examined to enhance image quality.

Feel free to communicate with the healthcare professional throughout the procedure if you experience any discomfort or have concerns.

It’s important to remain as still as possible to ensure clear ultrasound images are captured.

You may be asked to take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and then exhale. This breathing exercise can help improve image quality during the scan. However, if you are unable to do this, it’s not a problem, as it is not essential for obtaining accurate results.

What happens after the ultrasound examination ?

The findings will be discussed with you, and if necessary, guidance will be offered regarding whether a follow-up appointment with your GP is needed to review the results and determine the next steps.

Please note that specific instructions may vary based on your individual circumstances. Always adhere to the advice given by your GP.
